I received the following photograph from Sheila Fox and it shows her Grandfather Simon Cook. The newspaper articles gives details of the military records of Simon and and his brother Nathan Cook during the first World War. Simon and Nathan were my Great Grandfathers brothers.

 

Notes from Durham Newspapers:-

30th November 1917

WHEATLEY HILL BROTHERS' HONOURS

Two Wheatley Hill brothers, Corpl Simon Cook, Yorkshire Regiment, of 10 Maria Street, and Able Seaman Nathan Cook, R.N.D., of 12, Institute Street, have gained war honours. Corpl Cook's honour is a double one, he having been awarded the Military Medal and the French Croix de Guerro. Amongst other distinguished services, he repulsed three German counter attacks with his Lewis gun in half an hour, and afterwards repaired Lewis guns under heavy shell fire. He has been three years in the Army, including eighteen months service in France. His brother Able Seaman Nathan Cook, now discharged was awarded a Certificate of Merit by the G.O.C. the R.N. Division "For zeal and devotion to duty on July 31st, 1915 when serving with the Hawke battalion on the Gallipoli Peninsula. Unfortunately this Certificate was lost during the evacuation, but the Naval authorities have given him a document certifying that he had been awarded the Certificate of Merit.

WHEATLEY HILL HEROES

There was a large attendance on Friday night at the Palace Theatre Wheatley Hill when gold watches were presented to four Wheatley Hill men who gained honours - Corpl Simon Cook, Able Seaman N. Cook R.N.D., brother of Corpl Cook, Pte H Galley, Grenadier Guards, and Lance Corpl T.S. H. Mathews??? D.L.I. The fund has been raised in various ways by the Wheatley Hill Distinction and Welcome Home Committee and already several gold watches have been presented.
