I received this photograph from Jean Ogle (nee Walker) with some help from Frank Weatherall. It shows Robert Walker, the bandmaster, Jeans Grandfather and her father Robert (Bob) Walker immediately behind and Bobs brother Tom, the drummer. Jean also mentions another two brothers Ronnie and Jim who were also good musicians. The family lived in Wheatley Hill during the 20's and 30's. Robert, the bandmaster appears on the photograph of the Wheatley Hill Colliery Prize Band which I received from Richard Ward. On Roberts knee he is holding the ebony and silver top & tip baton presented to him by Wheatley Hill Workmans Social Club in 1922. A silver dedication around the centre is inscribed with "Wheatley Hill Workmans Social Club Presented to Robert Walker in recognition of Services rendered 1922 " Jean has the baton which will be passed on to one of her grandsons . Jean also mentions that there could be other men from Wheatley Hill in the band besides members of the Walker family.
Jean mentions that "Robert Walker..the band master on the photo was born in the U.S remember my father saying it was in Ohio. Later an aunt told me it was Excelsior in Ohio but I can't find an Excelsior in Ohio but there is one in Iowa. (mostly farming community) I can't imagine it was there where he (my great grandfather, yet another Robert Walker) lived as on my grandfathers wedding certificate his father (deceased) was a miner.
