George Lofthouse was a resident of Wheatley Hill until his death in 1959.
He was a quarryman at Wingate quarries and
later a miner at Wheatley
Hill. For most of his adult life he lived in Wingate Lane but moved to the
aged miners homes for his final years.
He was awarded the Edward Medal, a decoration instituted in 1907 by King Edward VII to recognise bravery by miners and quarry workers. The documentation below describes his heroic action and the resulting reward for his courage.
