I received the following photograph from John Orchard which gives a little history of himself and his brother Douglas.
Doug and John Orchard who hail from Wheatley Hill. Doug on the right and John on the left.
Doug worked as an apprentice Bricklayer at Thornley Colliery and in 1963 joined the Metropolitan Police. When he retired he went into local politics in Teddington in Middlesex and in 2002 was made Mayor of Richmond in Surrey. Doug is approaching his seventieth year and the Ponderosa as we call it in the rear of the garden is full of motor bike parts which he assembles as a hobby.
John worked as a Plasterer and in 1964 joined the Army as a Musician and served in the Durham Light Infantry and Irish Guards Bands. He joined the Met in 1979 and when he left he became the Mayor of Croydons Assistant Macebearer/Chauffeur. Unfortunately he was diagnosed with cancer in 2008 but is still fighting it.
