I received this picture of Dr. Gordon McLean from Allan Fulcher. His mother used to
baby sit for Dr. McLean's
two children (a boy and a girl) but he doesn't remember their names. She also
used to take care of some of his home patients too. He can remember Dr.
McLean's surgery in the Front Street which was part of
his house. When you
walked into the surgery, you could smell Methylated Spirit. He used to have a
burner on his desk using Methylated Spirit, this was used to sterilize needles
if he had to repair cuts etc. He can remember having cuts stitched by Dr McLean,
something that a nurse would do today. Allan's first job after leaving school was
at Doggarts in Spennymoor, and he needed a reference, it was Dr McLean who
wrote it out for him. He can still remember him sitting behind his desk and
smoking a cigarette while he wrote the letter. The doctor served in the Royal
Navy during the Second World War, he then took up his practice in Wheatley
Hill from about 1946 to about 1963.
