Elizabeth Eddy
I was born in 2, Cemetery Road, Wheatley Hill on Dec 4th
1934. The12th child of William &
Selina Eddy.
Went to the infants & junior schools, then up to the
Secondary Modern School.
From there I started training as a dressmaker in
Sunderland, but, soon realized I was going nowhere. After a few months I passed to go to
Sunderland College of art, where I studied Dressmaking & Design, Millinery
and General Art.
After gaining City & Guilds Certificates, I was
hoping to join the workroom in Binns at Sunderland, but there were no
vacancies, so I worked on the fabric dept. until a vacancy came along. In the mean time I applied for a post at
Leeholme Hospital in the workroom. I
stayed there until I was married in 1958. I then decided to continue my
dressmaking studies until I achieved my teaching certificate.
After having two girls and waiting until they could cope
on their own, the youngest 7yrs. I
started teaching part-time, while teaching I started to work for The Singer
Sewing Co. as a Rep.
From there in 1973 I went to work for Durham County
Council Social Services Dept. as a Craft Instructor. After two years I moved to teaching People
with learning difficulties which made it possible for me to do a teaching
diploma for teaching mentally handicapped adults. Staying there until I retied at 65yrs. I am thoroughly enjoying a well earned rest,
however I work harder now, but, I can please myself what I do. Activities like
gardening, dancing, DIY breaks and holidays.
