The girl in the photo, Anne Bell, is one of nine sisters who lived three doors up the street from us, at number 78. Of course, at the time the photo was taken there weren't yet nine of them...there would only have been three or four; the rest came later! I can remember that, when the last one was born their dad said, in an exasperated tone: "not another bloody lass!"; That has stuck in my memory for over 40 years. The third lad in the picture, standing next to Ann, was Dennis Cummings, who lived next door to us for a while, at number 70, but moved out when our Tom and I were quite small. Then the Matthews family moved in. I don't know if you knew them; the father was George and the mother was Elsie. They had a son, Ray and twin girls, Joan and Joy. Joan married Gary Pearcey and Joy married Owen Rowland. I believe Owen has something to do with the Thornley History Society, along with Freddy Bromilow. Joan and Joy's older brother, Ray, was known to one and all as Muffy!
