This is the oldest photograph of any of my family members (excuse the condition). It shows my Great Grandfather and Great Grandmother Nicholas Thornton and Martha Rowe. He was an overman at Wheatley Hill and lived in Gowland Street opposite the colliery. He was at one time Chairman of the Sherburn Hill Cooperative Society. His daughter Bessie Bosomworth was a labour councilor for Thornley. Nicholas died in 1925 as a result of a burst appendix. His wife Martha just thought it was some kind of stomach upset and treated it with a poultice not thinking how ill he was. Oddly enough I had an appendix operation in the mid 1980's. Thankfully the treatment wasn't via a poultice.
