Mark Hammond who lives in Hartlepool sent me this photograph of the Miners Hall Canteen during the 1926 General Strike.

Mark says that his great grandfather, Hugh Marks is in the top right hand corner. He thinks his grandson, Herbert Marks still lives in Wheatley Hill. When Marks grandfather Joe Hammond married Hugh's daughter Jane who lived at 19 Shop Street and Joe lived at 20 Institute Street, practically back to back. The above is a postcard and on the back someone had written telling of the great hardships suffered during the general strike. The writer goes on to say what a great man Churchill was, some strikers had barricaded themselves into a hall and Churchill had ordered the army to turn their guns on them.
