I received the following photographs from George Bannister and shows the St John's ambulance medal that his Great Grandfather John Bannister received in 1917 at Wheatley Hill.

The front of the medal is shown below and has John's initials engraved on the medal.

The back of the medal is shown with the letters.....W H A C. George contacted Margaret Hedley from the Wheatley Hill Heritage Centre for help in identifying the initials. Margaret informed George that the letters represented Wheatley Hill Ambulance Class. (I'm inclined to think it may be Wheatley Hill Ambulance Corps)

John was a witness to an accident at Middridge Colliery and this may have encouraged him to become proficient in medical issued when needed. He lost part of his foot in another accident which must have reinforced this desire.
