I received this photograph from Barbara Fletcher, her mother Jessie Kirby is shown 6th from the left in the middle row. She died May of 2003 aged 81. She was born in Wheatley Hill, then moved to Thornley and she was once Miss Thornley, but Barbara does not know what year. Barbara's mother and father were married for 57 years. He was from Hull originally and they met during the Second World War. Jessie used to work in a munitions factory in Newton Aycliffe and she still had shrapnel taken from her arm when one of the bombs they were assembling exploded. It wasn't until recent years that the women working at the factory received recognition for their efforts during the war and they formed their own club called the Aycliffe Angels Club.

Barbara's Uncle, Arthur Kirby and his wife Elsie, still live in Wheatley Hill, and have lived there for the past 45-50 years, Arthur was a very good boxer in his younger days.
