I obtained this photograph from Ian Worthington. It shows the Second World War Air Raid Wardens in the Welfare Grounds. The only one that I recognize is Ralph Watson on the front row just behind the few steps at the front.

I have an update from Mary Goynes on some of the members above. Mary's father James is located 3rd from the right on the back row, Tommy Ayre is located 6th from the right on the middle row  and Tommy Brown (used to be the cobbler in the village) is 3rd from the right on the front row.

Just received a further update from Karen ????, the man without the hat on the left hand side is John Robert Baxter (Roy), Karens grandfather who is presently living with his son and daughter in law at Billingham. John is 98 years old this month (Aug 2006) and is still as sharp as a tack. His mother wanted to christen him Roy but in those days you had to use a recognised name and couldn't just use what you wanted and the vicar refused to baptise him Roy so she called him the nearest which was Robert but she didn't want him to be called Bob so she put john in front but insisted everyone call him Roy.... as to why he wasn't wearing his tin helmet in the photo......... When the siren used to sound during the war he used to take so long to get ready and go on his rounds apparently it was a standing joke in the family that he was never ready till the 'all clear'...but one day the siren went and he 'swung' into action (swinging his helmet in the process) and smashed my grandma's 'best' room light shade so he was banned from having it in the house and had to keep it in his hut.  so when they were called for the photo he got dressed but forgot his helmet that was in the hut

Update from Irene Dahl (nee Alderton). Her Dad Mark Alderton is shown second from the left in the Front Row.
